Brest

  Overview

Located at the western edge of continental Europe, Brest is the central part of a wide metropolitan area known as "BMO" (Brest Metropole Océane), comprising 8 municipalities with an overall population of 210,000 inhabitants. Brest is the largest town in the Finistère (Land's End) with a well-developed harbour and the second military port in France.

  Culture

Every year, Brest hosts several events to celebrate its long maritime history. The largest amongst those is held every four years to show tall ships.

Brest also organizes several film festivals throughout year, and in particular a European short film
festival known as "Festival Européen du Film Court de Brest".

  Education & Research

With 23,000 students registered in 2009, Brest Métropole Océane has become a major education hub in the Finistère thanks to a multi-disciplinary University (University of Western Brittany) together with several French engineering schools, such as Télécom Bretagne, Ecole Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Brest (ENIB) and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Techniques Avancées de Bretagne (ENSTA Bretagne).

In addition, Brest Métropole Océane acts as a major research centre in West Brittany, thanks to the presence of world-class research institutes including Télécom Bretagne (Institut Télécom), Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), Cedre (Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution), and the French Polar Institute.
