MULTILINGUAL COMMUNICATION AND INTERACTIVITY :

THE WORD AND BEYOND

11th, 12th and 13th July, 2000

"GLAT 2000" will have as its theme:

Multilingual communication and interactivity: the word and beyond.

This main theme is divided into two parts:

1.- Linguistic and extra-linguistic aspects of iconic representations.

We know that the linguistic sign is a particular sign in a universe of signs, for human language is incomparably richer, more flexible and more efficient than any other language. Alongside human language, there are many other non-linguistic systems of communication: signs, symbols, and other iconic representations. There are also more and more studies being undertaken on human-machine-human interaction. These show us that iconography is one of the driving forces of human communication.

2.- Aspects connected with CALL (Computer Aided Language Learning).

With the arrival en masse of multimedia teaching materials, language teachers are being faced with new pedagogical, financial and technical choices. In order to help them make the right choice, "GLAT 2000" wishes to encourage papers on CALL materials, processes, systems or programmes which seem to be efficient, affordable and simple for language teachers to master from a technical point of view.

The four following approaches are possible:

  1. discourse analysis
  2. intercultural interpretation
  3. lexicalisation and/or new terminology. Problems of designation and conceptual interpretation.
  4. the types of computing tools necessary for better interactivity.

The conference will begin with a paper by María Teresa Cabré(Head of the IULA-University Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelone) on the theme: Specialised communication between linguistics and semiotics ".
